Referral Marketing: Sometimes You Can't Make A Recommendation
It's your reputation on the line too ...

It's no surprise that many of my clients have the same dilemma about their referral marketing. Here's a common one that arose yet again recently ...

A client asked me, "someone in my networking group is referring to me, but I don't feel comfortable referring to her. I'm not sure about the quality of her services. what should I do?" Never, ever refer or recommend someone until you are sure about the quality of their work.
It's your reputation with your contacts that is on the line. Spend some more time getting to know this person and their work. Who else is referring to them or using their services? Can they give you a testimonial?
If you have a real problem with their services, the best thing you can do is give some tactful and constructive feedback. Be clear on what is stopping you referring them and ask how they can respond.
It happened to me recently where the show stopper was the reference I was using on a promotional flyer. A kind person told me it was 'too old', so I put the effort in to update my testimonials.
If you find it too uncomfortable to give this type of feedback then the leader of your network group may be able to help. After all, if you have issues, so might others and this person is losing business opportunities.
"Would you like to know more?"

I help people build and maintain productive working relationships both with their work colleagues and with a wider network to win more business. I do this by combining my skills in coaching, mediation and training with my extensive experience in senior management.
What I love most about my work is when my clients get those “aha” moments because I know they have seen for themselves the way that they want to move forward. Then they will achieve their ambitions.
Helping people who are having challenges with their working relationships gives me enormous pleasure. It was my privilege when working in health care to see how people working together can make the impossible seem easy and accomplish miracles as a result.
So helping people build or restore strong relationship with their colleagues makes even the hardest work easier, alleviates distress for the individual and reduces problems for the whole organisation.
In all this work trust is an essential ingredient to winning business so most of my work comes through referrals. Referrals come through strong business relationships so it was a natural extension for me to work with Ascentiv and train others in how to get consistent and predictable referrals from their network.
What a fantastic way to earn a living!
