Why human agency matters: the importance of human control in the age of AI

Yet the organisations most likely to adapt successfully may not necessarily be the ones with the most advanced technology. Instead, they may be the ones who understand the importance of preserving human agency during periods of change.

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding AI adoption
is the belief that employees are simply afraid of change!

In reality, most people are remarkably adaptable. Staff regularly adjust to new software, evolving processes and shifting workplace structures. What people struggle with is not change itself, but the feeling that their contribution no longer matters within it.

When employees feel informed, involved and trusted, they are far more likely to embrace change positively.

They become willing to retrain, experiment with new ideas, and help shape the introduction of new systems. Even significant disruption can feel manageable when individuals believe they still have some influence over outcomes.

The real danger arises when people feel powerless!

If employees believe decisions are being made for them rather than with them, motivation can quickly evaporate. This breeds helplessness, making effort feel pointless because the future already seems decided. Once that mindset takes hold, engagement often fades and initiative declines.

This psychological response is often underestimated by many organisations. Businesses may assume resistance to AI stems solely from fear of redundancy, but the deeper issue is often the loss of control and identity in the workplace.

Employees who feel acted upon rather than included may withdraw into passive compliance, doing only what is required rather than contributing energy, creativity or ideas.

Ironically, companies with less sophisticated AI systems may sometimes adapt more successfully than those investing heavily in cutting-edge technology. A workplace culture built on communication, trust and involvement can foster resilience that technology alone cannot provide. Employees who feel psychologically invested in the organisation's future are far more likely to adapt alongside it.

The real leadership challenge of AI is therefore not purely technological. It is human. Organisations that succeed during this period of upheaval may ultimately be those that remember that people do not become helpless simply because change happens.

They become helpless when they believe their actions no longer matter.

Until next time ...
