Walking into your client's business isn't just about offering solutions; it's about understanding the environment you've stepped into. Before you try to influence anything, you need to get a feel for the culture ...

Building strong relationships, Brick by brick we lay, A sturdy foundation of trust

Building strong relationships, Brick by brick we lay, A sturdy foundation of trust

Watch how people communicate, how decisions get made, and how conflict is handled.Review their mission, values, and onboarding materials to grasp what the organisation believes about itself. This early cultural discovery prevents you from clashing with established norms and shows respect for the way things already work.

With that foundation, your next priority
is earning the boss's trust!

Leadership buy-in sets everything else in motion. Have an early alignment meeting to agree on goals and expectations, and adapt your communication style to what the boss responds to – data, efficiency, innovation, or good old-fashioned conversation. Deliver a small early win to prove your value. When leaders trust your intentions, they become your loudest advocates inside the business.

Team dynamics matter just as much. Job titles don't always reflect influence, so take time to identify informal leaders, connectors, and potential blockers. Observe how people interact in meetings and hold short one-to-one chats to learn their frustrations and working styles.

Understanding who shapes decisions and who quietly keeps the place running gives you the social map you need.

To get everyone on board, be clear about why you're there. People resist what they don't understand, so explain your role and focus on how your work supports their success. Link your involvement to benefits like reduced stress, smoother processes, or better outcomes. Wherever possible, create milestones with the team rather than delivering a ready-made plan from above.

Visibility helps enormously!

Attend meetings, use their tools, follow their formats, and adopt their internal language. The more you integrate into their workflow, the faster you stop feeling like an outsider with a clipboard. When resistance pops up – and it will – treat it with empathy. Ask about concerns, listen first, and build trust through consistency rather than pressure.

Keep momentum by offering regular, transparent updates. Establish a communication rhythm that suits them – weekly check-ins, monthly reviews, or simple dashboard-style summaries. Celebrate team wins publicly to reinforce progress and create positive energy.

But strong relationships aren't just about outputs – they're about being someone people actually want to collaborate with. Be approachable, responsive, and generous with insights that make their lives easier.

These small human touches often have more impact
than the cleverest strategy!

Finally, build feedback loops. Ask how you can support people better and adjust your approach based on their input. Align your success with theirs by agreeing on shared KPIs and reporting on outcomes that matter to them.

When a team feels you're genuinely invested in their goals, they'll invest in you right back.

Until next time ...
